Comedy magician Adam London visited Ruben P. Diaz Elementary School on Friday, March 6 to perform for students with perfect attendance. At Diaz, students with perfect attendance have no tardies, no early checkouts and are in school every day.
Andrea Michaels from Communities in Schools shared that one of the school’s major goals is to improve attendance and reduce chronic absenteeism. They like to shake things up with their rewards for the kids with perfect attendance, including pizza parties and extra recess. This month, Diaz wanted to give the students a special treat with a performance – many of which had never seen a magician.
Almost 300 children participate in the perfect attendance celebration each month, with 289 students in attendance for Adam’s performance, almost half the school’s population. Additionally, if the child is found SOARing (being Safe, Organized, Accepting, Respectful) the students will get a SOAR sticker.
At the performance, Adam London interacted with a few students and staff, including principal Rebecca Tschinkel, during his comedy act.
